2A: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
It's all about creating an effective and efficient classroom environment for both student and teacher
If students are in a positive environment, they will flourish
Teachers gain respect and students learn and grow
Teaching depends on the relationship between the students and the teacher
all students must be valued and safe, but also be allowed to take risks and learn
Teachers must manage, support, and facilitate relationships among themselves and their students and between their students
We must be aware of our verbal and nonverbal cues
As a teacher I will:
take care of myself so that I will be able to bring energy to the classroom and get my students excited about school
hold my students to a high standard; not because I want them to fail but because I know that they are smart and capable of excelling in the classroom
display their work and showing them that I am proud of them and that their work is valuable
Listen to students and their problems; showing them that they matter and their problems are not small
Show them why they need to learn what they are learning; relating what they are learning to their lives
2B: Establishing a Culture of Learning
importance and content of learning
Students active and involved in learning the content
teacher is taking advantage of teachable moments
Expectations for learning
clear
students are held to a high standard
Student pride in work
students are attentive to detail
carefully revise their work to reflect their best possible work
As a teacher I will:
make sure my students know what I expect of them
hold all my students to a high level of excellence: believing that they can all do the work I give them
make lessons engaging for my students; keep them active and attentive
show my students how proud I am of their work to foster pride in their own work by displaying it and pointing their work out to others
2C: Managing Classroom Procedures
Managing instructional groups
pairing students effectively and efficiently
helping the class to learn from each other
making sure all students are engaged in group work
Management of transitions
making moving from one class/subject to the next seamless and non-distracting
Teacher needs to be one step ahead of the students
transitions shouldn't take up instructional time
Management of materials and supplies
having materials together before class starts
knowing where the materials are located in the classroom, how to care for those materials, and where they go after use
making sure materials are accessible to all
Performance of non-instructional duties
attendance, after school care, bus line, etc.
must be done in an effective and efficient manner.
Supervision of volunteers and professionals
instructing/training these paraprofessionals helping you in your classroom
can help on parent/teacher night, open house, etc.
As a teacher I will:
have a transition procedure to follow that will keep students in line and help them shift to the next subject/activity
create effective learning groups at the beginning of the year that will stay together for the rest of the year
make sure to fulfill all my duties, not just the ones in the classroom
have an organized/neat space where materials are easily found and put back
bring outside help into the classroom when I can with proper training- hopefully parents so that they can see what their child's day actually looks like
2D: Managing Student Behavior
Expectations
making them clear for your students
students can sometimes help establish those expectations
Monitoring student behavior
having eyes in the back of our heads as teachers
observing the class in a way that is unobtrusive
Response to student behavior
reprimanding in a fair, respectful way
responding in an effective manner
2E: Organizing Physical Space
environment has to do a lot with how you learn
if students are anxious, they won't learn
safety and accessibility: our classrooms need be a safe place for students and also available to all students
Arrangement of furniture and use of physical space: making sure all students have access to classroom materials and arranging desks in a way conducive to learning
As a teacher I will:
create a colorful, organized classroom
be kind and welcoming to make them feel comfortable
use my desks well; read the classroom to figure out the best way to set up my desks and classroom
make it a comfy space: maybe a futon, beanbag chairs, pillows, blankets
