While in my math methods class, I got to be a part of a field experience. I got to teach two small group lessons and be a part of one co teaching lesson. I learned a lot from this experience. I was raised learning math traditionally so this was an interesting experience; I felt a little confused at first but slowly got at least a little more comfortable with the way my cooperating teacher was running class. She was very much into the hands on, learning your own strategies to get the answer kind of teacher. This was a new thing for me; it was always here is the algorithm and this is how you get the answer. I learned how to use questioning to help my students get to the answer and learned how to let them struggle a little in order to gain resilience and allowing them to create the strategy that works best for them. My co teaching lesson taught me how to work with someone else and my small group lessons taught me how to lead a group and gave me practice teaching. While I didn't always agree with my co-teacher's style of teaching or approach to how best to teach math I did learn a lot from them and gained good experience. Not only did I get to teach two lessons but I got to be a co-teacher and learn what that model looked like. It helped me learn how to use questioning to help students think through math and equations. It also introduced me to the idea of strategies vs. algorithms. I got to see played out how different strategies work better for some students than others and how students can figure out strategies on their own through their math exploration.
